The Rise of The Fallen
A “Faceless Mask” is a cruel magical implement once used by Avaleron to punish changelings, much the same way a Fetch Mark is used today. A Faceless Mask is a mask devoid of features save for two eyeholes. When the mask was placed on a person’s skin, the mask would instantly and painfully sear itself onto the flesh, and could not be removed without tearing skin from bone.
Many of the Changelings manipulated by The Zargoni Conspiracy were punished with the forced application of Faceless Masks as a form of eye-for-an-eye justice. The justification was that because the doppelgangers had stolen the faces of others, they deserved no faces of their own. Though the magic of the mask allowed the changeling to breathe, there was no way anyone with a mask affixed would be able to eat or drink, or even open their mouths to scream. To complete their humiliation, the changelings would then be crucified publicly and allowed to starve to death. Only Noh The Boojum, whose mouth had been opened in a scream when his mask was affixed, was able to wail and curse at his captors until he expired, which might have fed his legend.
Faceless Masks were also used on other shapeshifters, such as succubi.
